Portfolio Management and Investment Services

Our portfolio management and investment services are provided on a fee only basis. In order to structure a portfolio for your unique needs, we begin by gaining a clear understanding of your current situation and goals.  We integrate the various parts of your plan to be sure that they work towards a common objective. Some of the issues we consider include:

  1. Your investment goals
  2. Your time horizon
  3. The amount of risk you are willing to accept
  4. Your current situation
  5. Your past investment experience

As an independent firm, we have the freedom to construct a portfolio using funds that we believe will optimize returns while mitigating risk.  Our investment philosophy is based on a very structured and disciplined approach. We construct portfolios using highly cost efficient index funds that provide broad diversification.  This is primarily done using institutional quality funds from Dimensional Fund Advisors. Through this structured and disciplined asset allocation, your portfolio can attain more stability and can provide greater resistance to swings in the market over the long run. Our rationale and recommendations are clearly communicated to you to make sure that we are on the same page.

Our Process

Our Process is a systematic approach to determining the best plan to ensure that you are on track to reach your personal goals.  This process helps us to understand your true financial goals, create the best plan to accomplish them and keep your plan on track.  It generally consists of a series of five meetings:

Discovery Meeting

During our initial Discovery meeting, we’ll discuss investor realities, present our value proposition, explain our investment process and review our role as a fiduciary and how we offer protection.

Investment Planning Meeting

Our investment planning includes investment education, risk assessment, goal setting, situational analysis, presentation of a target allocation and a review of the investment process.

Decision Meeting

At the Decision Meeting, we will present the Investment Policy Statement, review and agree upon the proposed plan and propose an implementation process.

Portfolio Management Meeting

Portfolio management encompasses ongoing monitoring and review of your portfolio and investments, as well as rebalancing, reporting, tax management, cash flow management and trading activity.  We also conduct ongoing due diligence and compile and distribute quarterly performance reports.

Regular Progress Meetings

At mutually agreed upon intervals, we will conduct periodic progress meetings to uncover any situational updates, make any necessary adjustments to the Investment Policy Statement, answer any questions and review progress toward your stated goals.

I am glad to see the new requirement for investment advisors dealing with 401(k) plans take effect. Now advisors have to acknowledge their fiduciary status in writing and subscribe to an impartial standard of conduct. The big keys are that under these new standards, these advisors must:

  • Give advice in the clients' best interest
  • Charge reasonable compensation
  • Disclose conflicts of interest
  • Disclose the fees so they can be understood
  • Make...

The new rule going into effect with the Department of Labor (DOL) fiduciary rule gives brokers and insurance agents till January 1, 2018 to come into compliance with the rules we have been following for decades.

This is huge news for 401(k) plan participants. Now advisors will have to consider the fees, the benefits and the services provided before they recommend a rollover from a corporate plan to an IRA. Imagine that, a rule that makes these people have to actually work in someone...

Good news for 401(K) plan sponsors and participants! Under the new Fiduciary Standard of Care rule, all advisors that give investment advice to 401(k) sponsors and their employees (participants) now have to comply with the ERISA standard for fiduciary care.

Before this happened, only advisors who, like us, were subject to the Investment Advisors Act of 1940 were held to the fiduciary standard. Others had what's called the suitability standard. Brokers and insurance...
